Rand Paul Urges Trump to Take Immediate Action Against John Bolton, Revoke His Security Clearance

Published

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) urged President Donald Trump on Saturday to immediately rescind John Bolton’s security clearance.

As Trump’s former national security adviser, Bolton holds a top security clearance, meaning he is privy to extremely sensitive intelligence that only a small number of senior-level government officials have authorization to see, hear, or access.

But Paul wants that privilege revoked.

“No one, especially not John Bolton, should be able to use their security clearance for profit! I say revoke his clearance now ⁦@realDonaldTrump⁩,” the Kentucky senator tweeted.

Paul linked to a RealClearPolitics news story that reported that Bolton’s security clearance is in jeopardy of being revoked after Trump’s impeachment trial concludes.

In fact, two government officials told RCP that revocation is an “almost certainty” for Bolton.

The development comes after the manuscript for Bolton’s upcoming book was leaked this week. Some accuse Bolton of initiating the leak prior to submitting the manuscript to the White House for review, though he denies the allegation.

In his book, Bolton alleges that Trump told him last August that he wanted to continue freezing nearly $400 million in security assistance to Ukraine if the Ukrainian government did not cooperate with investigations into the Bidens, the New York Times reported. The explosive allegation would corroborate allegations of a quid pro quo.

Trump was quick to deny Bolton’s allegations.

The White House and Trump’s defenders have alleged that Bolton made the allegations to boost book sales.

I AGREE with Senator Rand Paul, Mr. Bolton shouldn’t have ANY Security Access Clearance!!

In fact, NO ONE that has left our government, should have ANY Security Access Clearance!!
Continuing with that sort of Clearance, AFTER leaving any employer, is absolutely stupid!

Agree, when a person leaves their security clearance should immediately be removed.

I don’t like or trust Bolton. I haven’t since he first worked at the State Department. But I don’t see any mishandling here of classified information on his part. He dutifully submitted an advance copy to the NSC for its review. It seems that someone in the NSC (probably Vindman) leaked a portion of his manuscript to the press. That doesn’t appear to be Bolton’s fault. The incident certainly should be investigated and the perpetrator(s) prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

THAT should have been a “no-brainer”………….
THAT security clearance should have been handed over the minute somebody leaves a job, whether it is by firing, resigning or retiring, doesn’t matter, the security pass should be revoked….
The government is being way too liberal with all those security passes “floating around”….

I agree, Ulla. Didn’t Peter Strzok get to keep his after he was fired, too?

I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that anyone should be able to keep top secret security clearance upon leaving the government unless they are working in a field that actually involves this type of clearance. They should be looked at once a year to make sure they actually still need it and for what purpose it’s being used.

yes, he should not have any security clearance at all, and the same goes for any other federal employee, after they leave, it and all clearance should be removed, and codes if and erased.same goes for ex presidents, and their federal security guards. they are no longer a special person, so why shoould taxpayers have to pay for secret service guards for them. if they get whacked, fine, take your chances like me and millions of other poor suckers on the street. if you were a piece of crap while president, well you brought it on yourself. and never mind guards for ex first ladies too, the real woman, i mean, not the males pretending to be women. know what i mean?
